Sara Graham Maurer of Tiburon, CA, passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 7, 2024, surrounded by her family.
A forth generation, Madison, CT native, she graduated from Daniel Hand HS, then Phi Beta Kappa, with honors in Economics, from Skidmore College. After graduating law school at Suffolk University, and winning the first year Moot court award, she worked at Ropes and Gray in Boston, and Debevoise and Plimpton in New York.
Sara was licensed to practice law in Massachusetts, New York, and California. Her family was very proud of the fact that she passed each bar exam on her first try.
She moved to San Francisco in 1988, and launched her own firm focusing on civil litigation. In her practice, she was a champion for the underdog, from victims of catastrophic injuries, workplace harassment, as well as sexual and child abuse.
She volunteered at the Ross Valley Players (where she appeared in several plays). She taught a program teaching mock trial skills to students at Kennedy High School in Richmond, CA, as well as a class on applying theatrical techniques in the courtroom at the annual meeting of the California Consumer Attorneys.
She was a vibrant and charismatic spirit in all situations. Those who knew her were touched by her vivacity and humor. She was a great storyteller, a skill she used effectively in the courtroom. One fellow attorney, marveling at Sara’s courtroom performance said, She could talk a dog off a meat wagon.”
She had many varied interests. She was an avid reader, loved traveling, gardening, theater, art, the MBC Follies and music. She was always game to learn something new.
Sara is survived by her husband Greg Johnson; and her daughter Margot Johnson of Tiburon; her sister Mary Maurer; and mother Marilyn Maurer of Madison; and her sister Jane Maurer, brother-in-law Harlan Reiniger and their son Alex Reiniger of Marblehead, MA; her father Charles Maurer of Madison, predeceased her.
A celebration of Sara’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at St. Stephens Church in Belvedere, CA. Contributions in her name can be sent to the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Society. A Celebration of Life also will be held spring 2025 in Madison, CT
